At The Other Room we try very hard to stay as environmentally friendly as we can. One of these ways is to work with suppliers who use recycled wood that is FSC accredited. Here are examples of a couple of pieces that we just received with the FSC tag affixed to the product for your information. Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is a pioneer forum where the global consensus on responsible forest management convenes and through democratic process effects solutions to the pressures facing the world’s forests and forest-dependent communities. FSC certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. Every now and then a trend hits the furniture world with a unique and original aesthetic. We have been seeing the influx of vintage, reclaimed and industrial in the world of furniture for some time. Now our neighbors to the east in Toronto have coined the phrase “steam punk”. This is the evolution of the industrial style of reclaimed and re-purposed furniture into a more functional manner. With our contemporary roots we would like to introduce our customers into the world of “steam punk” furniture, influenced by one of the most influential trends we have seen in years. It is trade show season. Here are some images of a few of the great new lines we are considering for the upcoming season. We have just finished the Toronto Furniture Show. Our buyers are very excited about what our suppliers are showing this season. Some of the new trends for the upcoming season include lots of colour, modular seating, modular tables, as well as expandable entertainment systems.

Sparkle and shine for holiday 2011

IT’S all about elegant sparkle for holiday 2011, says decorating and style expert Allison Andrew-Harris.

“I love Christmas,” says the co-owner of Country Furniture and its new contemporary counterpart in North Vancouver, The Other Room. “But let’s face it, it can be a little . . . much.”

Rather than let it look like a red and green confetti cannon exploded in your living room, Andrew-Harris recommends the cool, organic look of foiled bark candleholders, glittered ornaments and nature-themed decorations, like owls and birds.
